ONE MOMENT SILENCE

A streetphotography series

From Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto, Kameoka, Hiroshima and back (2013 – 2014)

It's the beginning of April - in Kyoto just the cherry blossom season has come to an end. On my last day in Japan I wander through the city and take pictures near Shijo Kawaramachi. Around noon the walkers are strolling relaxed at Kamo River. In the late afternoon the light floods almost horizontally in the narrow streets of the Nishiki market - the perfect time, therefore, to photograph street life. The series which is seen here i have photographed between 2013 and 2014. In addition to Tokyo, I have been also in Osaka, Hiroshima, Kawaguchiko and in Kameoka.

With ONE MOMENT SILENCE I have tried to take pictures of people only from behind or from the side. Many passers in Japan also wear a mouthguard, which at least partially hides the face. Sometimes I have photographed someone and then later asked if I may use the picture. Other photographs are portraits of people that I have talked to. In addition, I have decided, to use "boundary violations": always to show people only from behind, would almost be a kind of self-imposed censorship.
